
Michael Landes – Theater Maker
Playwright, dramaturg, and performer.
Michael Landes is a playwright, dramaturg and theater maker from New York City. His work has been presented by The Tank, The Brick, The Chain, La MaMa, ChaShaMa, Theatre In Asylum, Brooklyn Art Haus, and Under St. Marks. Full-length plays include Ghosts Aren’t Real (La Mama Galleria, 2018), Umbilical (Planet Connections Festival, 2018), A Hunger Artist (Lenfest Center for the Arts, 2024), Victory (Gitelman & Good Publishers, 2025), and The Phantom of the Opera’s Friend (New York Fringe Festival, 2025). He self-produced the series The $15 Plays, three self-produced plays that explored the economics of producing theatre today: Oedipus At The Intersection, The Attempted Making Of Nikola Hythlodaeus and the Five Utopoi in Five Acts and Roughly Fifteen Parts, and The Audience.
As a dramaturg he has written scripts for director-led and devised pieces, dramaturged productions of classic plays, and worked with playwrights on original work. Dramaturgy projects include Much Ado About Nothing with Play On Shakespeare at Ramapo College (2024), as well as adaptations of Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar, As You Like It, and A Midsummer Night’s Dream, and Chekhov’s The Seagull and Three Sisters.
Awards and residencies include La Mama Umbria Playwright’s Retreat (2017), the Sorbonne and Festival d’Avignon Summer School (2018), Belgrade Art Studio Residency (2019) and ChaNorth Residency (2019). MFA, Columbia 2024.
